Fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent died in Paris after a long illness at the age of 71. He was thrust into the spotlight when he was only 21 and chosen to replace Christian Dior when he died unexpectedly in 1957.
Saint Laurent is largely credited with making couture relevant again and translating the changing mood of the times into fashion. Going beyond the aesthetic he always attempted to make a social statement. The legendary designer is largely credited with inventing the pantsuit and empowering woman. His influence remained unravelled for 3 decades. From couture, retail, everyday fashion for men and women, perfume, accessories, footwear and red carpet he did it all creating the template for the 21st century super-designer.
Saint Laurent retired in 2002 saying that he could no longer relate to the contemporary world of fashion. Funeral services are slated for Thursday. French President Nicolas Sarkozy expected to attend.
